Driving is on the right side of the road.

Tunis Airport rental cars may be either automatic OR manual transmission. Make sure to verify when booking if you are not comfortable with a manual transmission.

Your local drivers' licence is required.

An International Drivers' Permit (or IDP) may be required, especially if your local drivers' licence is in a language other than the local language (you may inquire when you pick up your car).

Driving in Tunisia is not highly recommended, due to poor quality of roads, poor signage and driving habits. Driving is particularly dangerous at night, outside of the city and in major tourist areas.

Driving in Tunisia can be a nerve-wracking experience for westerners. Drivers completely disregard road rules (including which side of the road to drive on), traffic signals and traffic signs. While pedestrians do have the right of way, they flagrantly ignore their own safety, wandering into traffic without warning, and even running between traffic on highways.Outside cities, driving conditions can be very poor, with many unpaved roads and potholes hidden by blowing sand. Don't even think about desert driving unless you have a 4 wheel drive, a local to accompany you and a convoy to travel with.
