London Stansted Airport is an easy commute from both London and Cambridge using any number of public transport options. These cities are steeped in history and, at the same time, at the leading edge of the age of technology, yet they are worlds apart in atmosphere and vibe. If you are on a layover at STN London Stansted Airport you can take your pick of layover activities from two totally different cities.

London Tours

A number of tour companies offer layover tours especially designed to show tourists the very best in sights and sounds of London. These tours take in all the famous attractions including Buckingham palace, Tower of London and Westminster Abby. For someone new to London this type of tour would make the most of the time you have by cutting out all that extra time figuring out which tube station you are at.

Cambridge

Cambridge's small city centre is characterised by the colleges whose architecture stems from centuries past, the river snakes between them and, amidst all this history is the market square. The city’s atmosphere is dominated by the university, giving a sense of safety where it never really gets busy, but is never too quiet. An eclectic mix of science and culture nestle comfortably side by side and, with its winding roads and cobbled streets, cycling is a feasible and popular method of transport.

Buckingham Palace

If you have a short layover and want to fit in something quintessentially English, why not head off to Buckingham Palace to witness the Changing of the Guard, at 11:30 in the mornings. The official residence of the Queen, Buckingham Palace has long been of great intrigue to visitors and locals alike. During August and September, when the Queen makes her annual state visit to Balmoral, 19 state rooms are open to visitors.

Carnaby Street

Not far from the retail therapy haven of Oxford Street and Regent Street is the pedestrianised shopping zone of Carnaby Street. Known for its numerous fashion and lifestyle retailers and a large number of independent boutiques, Carnaby Street is a great experience all round. Initially laid out in about 1685, this centuries-old street joined the fashion parade in the late 1950s and very quickly became the place to shop for certain styles.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to STN London Stansted Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
