The city of Seattle is surrounded by water on either side, with the Puget Sound to the west and Lake Washington to the east, being spanned by the I-90 and US-520 highway (Evergreen Point Floating Bridge). Many of the north-south streets in the city centre are numbered, with prominent roads including the US-99 (Alaskan Way Viaduct), the I-5 interstate, Madison Street, Boren Avenue and Broadway.

Parking around the downtown district is expensive and charged per hour. Street parking is also pricey and often limited to just two hours. Therefore, many people choose to find a cheap car park outside of central Seattle and then catch a local bus, with all day bus passes being particularly inexpensive. One of the city's cheapest and most convenient car parks is located at the Seattle Centre, with monorail trains and shuttles connecting many places of interest, such as Pioneer Square and also Pike Place Market.
