The train from Munich Airport is an easy and efficient option. Take the S8 if you can. Remember, if you take the S1 train from Munich Airport, make sure you are on the right half of the train before it separates on the way to the city centre.


Munich Airport Train Rates & Fares


To the City centre, Hauptbahnhof, and Ostbahnhof stations fare is about EUR 10.


The S8 train from Munich Airport goes to Geltendorf from MUC Munich Airport via Ismaning, Ostbahnhof, Isartor, Marienplatz, Karlsplatz and Stachus, Hauptbahnhof (Main Station), Laim and Pasing to Geltendorf and back. At the Ostbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and in Pasing, passengers can transfer to mainline and regional train services.


Travel time to and from the Munich Airport:


  • Besucherpark - 2 minutes
  • Ismaning - 14 minutes
  • Ostbahnhof - 33 minutes
  • Marienplatz - 38 minutes
  • Hauptbahnhof - 41 minutes
  • Pasing - 50 minutes


The S1 to and from Ostbahnhof: the airport S-Bahn rail link S1 travels from Munich Airport via Neufahrn, Moosach, Laim, Munich Hauptbahnhof (main station), Marienplatz to Ostbahnhof and back. At the Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and Ostbahnhof, passengers can transfer to mainline and regional train services.

The Munich Airport train station is on the basement level of the central area (between the two terminals, but closer to terminal 1) and is well sign posted from both terminals. Buy your Munich Airport train ticket at the desk on the ground level or from the machines. Validate your ticket in the machine at the top of the escalator before descending to the platform level.


Two Munich Airport train lines depart from Munich Airport to the city centre every 10 minutes, the S1 and the S8. Both take very different routes to reach the city centre. With the S1 train, a day travel card for use on the airport train is about EUR 10.00. The S-Bahn train lines S1 and S8 go to the centre of Munich in approximately 40 minutes. We recommend the S8 train from Munich Airport as it is direct; the S1 will separate before it reaches the city and if you are not on the right half of the train then you will not be heading downtown!
