Although MUC Munich Airport is nearly 30km from Munich, the train gets you into the city centre in just under 40 minutes. This means that exploring Munich while you are on a layover is quite simple, and this fascinating city is definitely worth a visit if you have the time.

Deutsches Museum

With exhibits ranging from natural sciences to new technologies, and a Kids Kingdom thrown in, this museum is a great place to head to if you are in Munich on a layover. There will certainly be something to interest everybody. The Kids Kingdom is an interactive area for children aged 3 to 8 which offers them an intriguing foray into the world of science and technology.

Munich Hellabrun Zoo

With 4000 animals of 371 different species to look at, Munich Hellabrun Zoo, will keep you entertained for hours. This ‘geo-zoo’ is designed with natural habitats which provide the perfect location for breeding endangered species. There are a number of shows to watch including the elephant show and you can have a turn riding a camel if the horse is not unusual enough for you. Don’t get carried away though, you have a plane to catch, remember?

Viktualienmarkt

Originally a farmer’s market this 22000m² food market now offers the most extensive array of gourmet foods available in Munich. For the opportunity to experience traditional German fare, head to this square in the centre of Munich. There is also a beer garden where you can quench your thirst after tasting all the mouth watering delights available.

Marianplatz

This central square offer all sorts of shopping opportunities from traditionally German products and food, to unique souvenirs and international clothing and accessory brands. Anyone wanting to spend their layover shopping should definitely head down to Marianplatz. You will have your choice of department stores, independent retailers and traditional shops to choose from, as well as a number of cafés and restaurants to relax in when you are all shopped out!

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to MUC Munich Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
