 Las Vegas Airport Taxi Scams

In May 2013, Forbes Magazine's article, The Biggest Scam in Vegas May Be Your Taxi Ride, by Andrew Bender, quoted Todd Romaine, co-founder of IHateTaxis. It's a good, eye-opening read.

The Long Route

Some Las Vegas taxi drivers take the tunnel route to the Strip which is a less direct route and which they claim is to avoid construction or traffic. This results in your ride costing up to USD 23 as opposed to the more direct route fare of USD 15. IHateTaxis.com has learned that some cabbies take this route to make an extra USD 7-8 per ride. A legislative audit released in April 2013 revealed that area drivers overcharged airport passengers by nearly USD 15 million in the previous year. To avoid this scam make sure you confirm the route and the fare with the driver prior to departure.

Electronic Swipe Fee of Grandeur

IHateTaxis.com has confirmed based on visits to Las Vegas in November 2013 that all taxi companies charge a USD 3 per ride credit or debit card card fee. As this is a flat fee, and taxi trips in Las Vegas tend to be relatively short, this wil be a proportionately high surcharge on top of your cab fare and this is the highest swipe fee IHateTaxis.com has come across anywhere so far. Most swipe fees, if levied for the convenience of a portable electronic credit/cash transaction, equate to less than USD 1 per transaction (average of 5-6% of the total fare) to the operator, so this is an additional grab for the convenience of using plastic. To avoid this scam make sure you pay cash only!

Tips a Plenty with Plastic

Be very careful when tipping Las Vegas taxi operators with credit or bank cards.  When completing your electronic credit card or bank card transaction, the only tip options displayed are 20%, 30% and 40%.  So if you are not paying attention then your taxi ride which normally costs USD 15-18 cash from the Las Vegas Airport to hotels along the strip, might cost double that (base fare + excessive tipping + credit/debit card swipe fee).  If you further add in the first scam noted above (The Long Route) then the fleecing could be close to USD 40. To avoid what we believe to be unrealistic tipping amounts, we recommend:
  • Pay cash for the ride and the tip
  • Pay plastic for the ride and then cash for the tip
  • Choose to enter a dollar value instead of ridiculous set percentage on the card machine
  • Add your own tip onto the bill and then tell the Las Vegas taxi driver to input the whole amount into the card machine and bypass the tip option (e.g., your taxi ride comes to USD 17 and you ask the driver to make it an even USD 20).
