Fort McMurray is the largest settlement in the Athabasca Oil Sands. The city has been experiencing an economic boom over the last 15 years due to a corresponding boom in the Athabasca Oil Sands to the north.

The population of Fort McMurray, in 2011, was either 61,374 or 76,797, depending on who you ask. The variations are due to census sources, changing boundarines and whether the shadow population of 2000+ workers living in hotels is included. Either way, the population in the area is roughly double what it was 15 years ago, putting tremendous pressure on the airport.

Fort McMurray Airport (IATA: YMM, ICAO: CYMM), also referred to as Wood Buffalo Airport, is southeast of Fort McMurray, in the municipality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, Canada.

Fort McMurray Airport is in the middle of a major expansion, as the 700,000+ passengers a year it is handling is ten times the traffic it was designed to handle (714,659 in 2010). The expansion plan includes a new terminal and a second runway, along with more gates and stores, tripling its current size.

In fall 2012, Canada Customs services were added, making international flights now possible from Fort McMurray Airport. In December 2012, Sunwing Airlines began offering seasonal non-stop service from to Puerto Vallarta Airport (PVR). In June 2013, United Airlines will offer non-stop service to Denver International Airport (DEN), with onward connections to 100+ destinations, 20 of which are international.
