WLG Wellington International Airport is about 7 km from downtown Wellington and the Metlink Flyer will see you into the city centre for just NZD 5.50. Once there you have a multitude of experiences to choose from to keep you busy until you have to head back to WLG Wellington International Airport for your onward flight.

Lord of the Rings Locations Tour

If you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy then you are heading right into the heart of Frodo’s world. You can take a half day or full day tour during which well informed guides can bring the locations to life and you will get to see many of the places, views and details first hand. You can also take a Lord of the Rings Helicopter Tour but you do need to be in Wellington for a full day to fit this experience in.

The Wellington Cable Car

One of Wellington’s oldest and most popular tourist attractions, the Wellington Cable Car runs from Lambton Quay in the heart of the city. Before you know it you have been whisked from under the corporate towers of The Terrace past Kelburn Park and Victoria University to the top entrance of the Wellington Botanic Gardens. From there you have a stunning view over the city and Te Whanganui-a-Tara (The Great Harbour of Tara). You can also visit the Cable Car museum situated in the old cable car winding room as well as the Carter Observatory. You can either get a return trip to the city or, if you have time, you can walk back to Lambton Quay via the historic Bolton Street Cemetery and the Beehive. Cable cars run every 10 minutes every day of the year except Christmas Day.

Te Papa Tongarewa

If you fancy taking in a bit of New Zealand Culture, head off to the National Museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. Entrance is free and there are myriad interactive and visitor-focused experiences to teach you about New Zealand's geology and natural environment as well as the stories of New Zealand's indigenous people, the Māori. There are diverse art and visual culture displays and a number of tours with a knowledgeable guide will provide you with all the information in an exciting and informative way.

Shopping

If it is retail therapy you are after head to Lambton Quay where you will find the Old Bank Shopping complex. With a number of high profile fashion designers, good places to eat and an animated clock that tells the historical story of Plimmer’s Ark, there should be something there to keep everyone happy until it’s time to head back to WLG Wellington International Airport.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to WLG Wellington International Airport in time for your connecting flight and enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
