Downtown San Francisco is a complex system of narrow one-way streets and steep hills. Many areas are bottlenecks and traffic can be heavy at times, with parking spaces hard to locate. Also keep an eye out for local drivers, who often cross traffic and pull out without warning. Traffic jams can be particularly bad during the morning rush hours when crossing the famous Golden Gate Bridge, or in the afternoon when heading north to the Sausalito area. A parking area is available on the northern side of the bridge.

If you know the area well or are in transit to other parts of California then a SFO car rental is recommended.  We also advise renting a (or bringing your own) GPS to ensure you can safely and confidently navigate the streets. If you will just be staying in the city centre, a car is required (transit is good and there are plenty of taxis), and parking is expensive.
