Oslo is one of the world's great cites, so if you have a layover at Oslo Gardermoen Airport, take time to explore.

Norwegian evening on a fjord

Norway is well known for its Fjords so why not hop on a traditional wooden sailing ship to be taken on a surreal journey through a maze of green islands. While you are at it, you can indulge in a Norwegian prawn buffet, which is included in the price. The cruise lasts 3 hours and must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment.

Bygdøy Peninsula

Hop on a commuter ferry and head to this regal area of Norway in which the you will find many top attractions. There are museaums depicting life in Norway from Viking days to the present, you can stroll around the lusciously green parks or along the beach, or you can wander around the built up areas taking in the architecture, culture and rich history. This is a part of Norway that should not be missed given the opportunity to explore it.

Slottsparken

Palace Park, or Slottsparken, is Oslo's city centre park, which covers a total area of 225 acres and surrounds the Royal Palace and the Palace Square. Large lawns sprawl under towering trees and are interspersed by walkways, avenues and landscaped water. Altogether there are about 2000 trees. You can wander around taking in the statues and monuments including those of Gustav Vigeland, Niels Henrik Abel from 1908, in Mobile Hill, and of Camilla Collett from 1911, in the park outside the castle's northern wing. There are many others to see and this would be a great place to stretch your legs while taking in some of Norway’s history in between flights.

Karl Johans Gate

Oslo's main shopping district and business street is Karl Johans Gate. This partly pedestrianised area runs northwest from the Central Station (Sentralbanestasjonen) to the Royal Palace and includes many attractions as well as shops and eateries. Street vendors and entertainers, Parliament, the National Theatre, Grand Hotel and the university are all within striking distance of this street. There are hundreds of shops to choose from and the park between the Parliament and National Theatre is turned into an ice-rink in the winter.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to Oslo Gardermoen Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
