Tambo Airport is the gateway to a vibrant, interesting and notoriously dangerous city, but if you have planned your trip carefully and are always aware of yourself and your surroundings, you can get the most out of Johannesburg without encountering any of the crime for which it is so famous. With so many amazing attractions to choose from, a look into some of these below might give you an idea of what you could get up to next time you are passing through Johannesburg city.

Zoo Lake

Zoo Lake is a man made lake situated about 15 minutes from the centre of Johannesburg city. It is a popular destination for walkers, joggers, skateboarders and children, and there are leisurely activities available for everyone. You can take a stroll around the lake which will last about two hours, you can row out on the water, or have a lazy meal in the restaurant. Zoo lake is steeped in history and has many interesting facts to uncover as you explore. If you feel the need to unwind and stretch your legs, this is definitely the place to visit.

Johannesburg Botanic Garden

To indulge a need for colourful nature you could head to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. There are over 30 000 trees and one of the finest plant collections in the world. The herb gardens are home to a wide variety of traditional African medicinal, culinary and cosmetic herbs. This is one of the most popular passive recreation areas for Jo’burgers to meet and relax and would be the perfect place to chill out before you head off to your next destination.

Johannesburg Zoo

If you want to get a feel for Africa but are only just around long enough for a meeting or two, head off to the Johannesburg Zoo for a concentrated wildlife experience. First established in 1904, the Johannesburg Zoo began a huge but necessary upgrading in 2004/5 and there are great plans for further development ahead. For a fantastic family day out or a quick indulgence into a wildlife wonderland, Johannesburg Zoo, is a great place to spend time before you leave this African city.

Shopping at Sandton City

Just 15 minutes from JNB Johannesburg O R Tambo International Airport on the The Gautrain is the shopping Mecca of Sandton City. Offering all the top branded shops as well as eateries, kids entertainment, movies and more there is something at Sandton for everyone. You can indulge in your need for retail therapy, tantalise your taste buds with culinary delights, or relax in cinematic escapism at one of the latest releases. If you have many different ideals to attend to, Sandton is a great escape from JNB Johannesburg O R Tambo International Airport until you have to catch your connecting flight.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to Tambo Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.

Tip: Johannesburg does have high crime levels, though tourists are rarely targeted. Women should avoid walking alone. Ask locals, such as hotel staff and police, for guidance. Note that the armed security guards you see around the city are not police.
