Helsinki Vantaa Airport was built for the 1952 Olympics and is now considered one of the best airports in Europe. It is 18km from the centre of Helsinki and very easily accessible from the HEL Helsinki Vantaa Airport with efficient and modern public transport.

Kotiharjun public sauna

Finland is well known for its love of saunas and almost every hotel and guest house will have one to indulge yourself in if you have booked accommodation. If you are just in Helsinki for the day you can head down to the Kotiharjun Public Sauna in the Kallio district. This sauna is Helsinki’s only remaining wood block sauna and as such is an inherent part of the culture of the city.

Helsinki Sightseeing Tour

If you are short on time and want to see as much of this beautiful city as you can, why not book a sightseeing tour. These tours go from the Olympia Terminal at Central Station which is easily accessible from the HEL Helsinki Vantaa Airport. The tour takes just over an hour and a half and visits sights such as the historical centre with Senate Square, the Presidential Palace, City Hall, the Parliament building, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. You will also stop at the Sibelius Monument and, when possible, at the Temppeliaukio Church (the church in the rock).

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress

Construction of Suomenlinna Sea Fortress began in 1748 as a maritime fortress to protect Helsinki and as a garrison town and base for archipelago navy. Suomenlinna is now a UNESCO World Heritage sites and is one of the most popular sights in Finland. A population of more than 800 people live permanently on this group of islands and with architecture, culture, history and nature to attract your attention, this is a great place to visit if you have the time.

Stockmann

One of the biggest department store chains in Finland, Stockmann Helsinki offers over 50 000m² of shopping heaven. Don’t plan to find a bargain here as Helsinki is not the cheapest place in Europe to shop, but for style and experience it has to be near the top of the list. With shops, health spas, eateries and entertainment available, there should be something here for everyone.

As always, make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to HEL Helsinki Vantaa Airport in time for your connecting flight. Enjoy your transit city rather than whiling away the time leaning up against your luggage in the departures lounge.
