For the past few years, Berlin-Schönefeld Airport has been undergoing major expansion. When complete, the transformed airport will become Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), the new airport for the entire Berlin-Brandenburg region and the German capital. Tegel Airport (TXL) will be closed approximately six months later, joining Templehof (THF) which closed in 2008. Operations as Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) have been delayed to 2018, at the earliest. Update: Berliners are petitioning to keep Tegel Airport open.

Important: the opening of the new Berlin Brandenberg BER Airport has been delayed to 2018, at the earliest. The city's other two airports, Schoenefeld SXF and Templehof THF will continue to operate until that time, at the earliest.
