Hailing a non-prepaid taxi is not recommended for tourists, but if you do, be aware that there is a ARS 2 toll and ARS 0.80 toll if the driver goes by the autopista (as should be done); the tolls will be added to your fare. You should select a taxi that is dropping someone off. It works out to around ARS 50-55 to downtown. You should not do this unless you have some familiarity with Buenos Aires and speak Spanish well.

Taxicabs that loiter in front of popular tourist destinations like the National Museum are looking for tourists. This may be inopportune for you. Your chance of falling prey to a scam increases in these situations, like having your money exchanged for fake currency. Stopping a cab a block or two away on a typical city street where locals would do the same is a somewhat better choice.
